Tipi Manufacture

LPM Bohemia Tipi’s are made with traditional materials sourced locally and reponsibly

Standing tall above the sky line the North American Tipi is both majestic and iconic. As one of the most recognisable and elegant of indigenous structures, for some no other tent will do.

Tipis – A bit of history

tipis historyThe American Indian was a strictly practical Man, but he was also a born artist. As a result, his inventions are commonly as beautiful as they are serviceable. Sometimes we can make these of more durable materials, but we can never improve on their design. Among his contributions to civilization are his canoe, his snowshoe, his moccasin, and his tipi.

The Sioux word for tipi is formed of 'ti' meaning to dwell or live, and 'pi', meaning used for; thus, 'tipi', means used to live in.

It is well named!

Materials

POLES

Different woods were used for tipi poles amongst indigenous North American Indians. In the Rocky Mountain region lodge-pole pine was usually available and was prized by the Indians for their poles – thus the name. In some sections western yellow pine was used whereas in Minnesota and Wisconsin, Tamarack was used. Both White and red cedar was particularly saught after because of its strength and weight...
You get the message. The logic of using readily available and local renewable resources was nothing new to people living in touch with their environment and we can manufacture with a range of local woods including spruce and chestnut.

COVER

Chief One bull (nephew of the famous sitting bull) and his wife Scarlet Whirlwind from the Sioux still operated a buffalo skin tipi up until 1936 but we would recommend a 12 oz cotton canvas although there are other options that may suit your proposed function.

Specifications/Options

As with the materials needing to suit function so does the size and style of your tipi need to suit your plans for it. If you plan to hit the road with your tip the length of the poles and the vehicle you have will be a consideration.

We like to talk through your requirements so we can advise on the best size and type of structure as well as such extras such, Colour, skirt option, flooring Materials, Brazier etc.

FAQ

How long should my Tipi last?

Depending on type of design any time from 10 to 20 years. Again the life of the cover will depend on the materials chosen and how long the tent is left up at one time. Careful storage and treatment will always ensure a longer life – please ask for advice.

How long does a Tipi take to erect?

Slightly longer than the winner of the tipi pitching races at the tribal fairs that were popular until around 1915 but you can have your tipi beautifully pitched in a matter of hours. Practice makes perfect!

When should I pack up my Tipi?

The key here is keep it dry. Try and choose a Sunny day before packing away all materials dry and in a breathable bag (a canvas bag is supplied with your purchase) Avoid plastic containers or storage areas prone to condensation. The fabrics do contain a powerfull anti-fungaside but mildew rot will creap in if they are packed away wet.

Does the Tipi require much maintenance once erected?

All structure need to be kept an eye on to some degree once erected. Extreme weather conditions may require a ‘batterning down of the hatches’ or at least some tweaking of the smoke flaps! Your tipi may have traditional smoke flaps which help any fire inside to draw properly and need to be managed correctly to stop leakage if very wet. There are lots of other trick to owning most tents and these form part of the fun as well as skill of their management.

What's the best surface for my Tipi?

If your Tipi is changing location frequently a ground sheet with tailored carpet on top may be the best solution but for a beautiful finish you can’t beat a wooden floor or deck. We can provide a full deck for your tipi – please enquire.
